The teat, the milking equipment and the housing
Hygiene on a livestock farm is played out on three fronts, and each one calls for a different type of product. The first is the teat: preparing it before milking and protecting it afterwards. The second is the equipment: circuits, pipework and tanks. The third is the housing: the surfaces and elements of the facilities where the animals live and are transported, which are cleaned and then disinfected.
Instaquim (Detervic, S.A.) has manufactured at its own plant in Vic (Barcelona) since 1990, with ISO 9001 and ISO 14001 certification. Today it has 320 products for 16 sectors, is present in 13 countries and has more than 40 active distributors. More information in the livestock sector.
Step by step: what is applied at each stage
This is the general outline (the specific routine is set by each farm with its veterinarian) and the product that corresponds to each step according to its technical data sheet:
- Teat cleaning. Remove dirt and residues of sealant from the previous milking, as indicated in the sealants' data sheets.
- Pre-dipping. Apply the sanitiser and respect its contact time. Nipplac Foam is applied neat with a foam applicator and left to act for at least 25 s; Nippclean is used neat with specific foam applicators and you wait about 30 seconds; Iod Pv is applied neat by spraying or dipping.
- Removal and drying. Completely remove the residues of Nipplac Foam and remove Nippclean; with Iod Pv, dry the teats completely before milking.
- Milking.
- Post-dipping or sealing. Apply the sealant as soon as the teat cups are removed: Iod Pro or Nipplac Pro, neat by dipping; Iod Pv, by spraying or dipping; or the mixture of Condnipple A and Condnipple B with an applicator cup, leaving it to air-dry.
- Equipment cleaning. When finished, clean circuits, pipework and tanks. Vacid is the acid detergent whose data sheet expressly includes the cleaning of milking parlours.

Pre-dipping and sealing: how each product differs
For before milking there are three options. Nipplac Foam is formulated with lactic acid and emollients: it removes dirt and the residues of products applied after milking, and it does not drip, which avoids product loss. Nippclean contains chlorhexidine digluconate, surfactants and skin protectants, and its compact foam prolongs the contact time on the skin of the teat. Iod Pv, a liquid based on povidone-iodine and emollients, is used for pre- and post-milking treatment.
For after milking, Iod Pro is a viscous product based on povidone-iodine and emollients that forms an aseptic protective film against dirt and microorganisms and contains softening agents that prevent irritation. Nipplac Pro is a viscous product with lactic acid and skin protectants for protecting the teat after milking. Both are applied neat by dipping.
The Condnipple A system (lactic acid, glycerine and emollients) is activated with Condnipple B (sodium chlorite): 50 ml of B is added for every litre of A in a well-ventilated area. The mixture forms a protective layer that prevents microbial contamination and contains conditioning ingredients that prevent irritation.
Cleaning of circuits, pipework and tanks
Vacid is a controlled-foam acid detergent, with high wetting and penetrating power, indicated for the deep cleaning of circuits, pipework, vats, tanks and vessels in milking parlours. For circulation cleaning it is used at between 5 and 10 g/l for 5-10 minutes at 50-60 ºC, after flushing the installation with running water, and then rinsed with cold drinking water. To remove old scale deposits the dose rises to 50-100 g/l.
For recirculation or automatic cleaning, the range is completed by Clor Df, a chlorinated, non-foaming alkaline degreasing detergent; Acid Pro, a controlled-foam acid descaler that does not attack chromed or enamelled materials or rubber and plastic seals; and Nitracip Pro, strongly acid, based on nitric acid, formulated for circuits and CIP systems in the food industry. Ask us for the right routine for your equipment.
Cleaning and disinfection of animal housing
The order matters: first the building is emptied and the organic matter removed, then it is cleaned, rinsed, left to dry and only then disinfected. After disinfection, the safety period is respected, the building is ventilated and, when management allows, a sanitary downtime is kept before the animals are rehoused.
For the disinfection phase, InstaBact® 3000 Uso en entorno ganadero is a bactericide, fungicide and virucide formulated with quaternary ammonium salts (didecyldimethylammonium chloride, 4.5 %) for the disinfection of facilities and surfaces related to the housing and transport of animals. Its registration number is 11551-P, and it complies with standards UNE-EN 1656:2020, UNE-EN 14349:2013, UNE-EN 1657:2020 and UNE-EN 14675:2015.
According to its data sheet, it is diluted in water depending on the type and level of contamination and the application method: at 0.2% as a bactericide for immersion of items, 100% as a bactericide for surface disinfection, at 4% as a fungicide and at 80% as a virucide, with 30 minutes of contact time. The safety period is 6 h for its application as a virucide and bactericide in surface disinfection and 3 h as a bactericide by immersion and as a fungicide, ensuring optimal ventilation of the premises before the animals are rehoused. It is supplied in 20 kg and 1000 kg.
The complete protocol is in the guide to disinfection of stables and livestock buildings.

Frequently asked questions about livestock hygiene
What is the difference between pre-dipping and post-dipping?
Pre-dipping is applied before milking to sanitise the teat and is then removed; post-dipping or sealing is applied just after milking and stays on the teat until the next milking. For before milking we manufacture Nipplac Foam, Nippclean and Iod Pv; for after, Iod Pro, Nipplac Pro, Iod Pv and the Condnipple A + B system.
Iodine, chlorhexidine or lactic acid?
Iod Pro and Iod Pv contain povidone-iodine and emollients; Nippclean, chlorhexidine digluconate with surfactants and skin protectants; Nipplac Foam and Condnipple A, lactic acid, glycerine and emollients; and Nipplac Pro, lactic acid and skin protectants. The choice depends on the time of application, the system (foam, spray, dipping or applicator cup) and the farm's routine.
Does the pre-milking product have to be removed before milking?
Yes. According to their technical data sheets, with Nipplac Foam all product residues must be completely removed from the teats before milking; with Nippclean, wait about 30 seconds and remove the product before milking; and with Iod Pv, dry the teats completely before milking.
How is the Condnipple sealant prepared?
Add and mix 50 ml of Condnipple B for every litre of Condnipple A in a well-ventilated area. Immediately after milking it is applied to the teats with an applicator cup and it is not dried with a cloth, but left to air-dry. Condnipple B must only be used to prepare the mixture with Condnipple A.
