Virucide (EN 14476)

A virucide is a chemical disinfectant or antimicrobial agent specifically formulated and validated to inactivate or eliminate enveloped and non-enveloped viruses on surfaces or in solutions. The designation EN 14476 refers to the European standard test method that certifies a product's effectiveness against a broad spectrum of viruses, including lipophilic enveloped viruses (such as influenza and coronavirus) and hydrophilic non-enveloped viruses (such as norovirus and rotavirus). For a product to be classified as virucidal under EN 14476, it must achieve a logarithmic reduction factor of at least 4 (99.99% inactivation) within specified contact times, typically ranging from 30 seconds to 5 minutes depending on the virus type and surface conditions.

In the food industry and HORECA sector, virucidal disinfectants are essential for maintaining hygiene standards, particularly in food preparation areas, kitchen utensils, and dining surfaces where viral cross-contamination poses significant health risks. During periods of heightened viral transmission, such as seasonal influenza or norovirus outbreaks, food service establishments rely on EN 14476-certified products to ensure rapid surface decontamination between service cycles. Similarly, healthcare and sanitary facilities depend on virucidal solutions for disinfecting medical equipment, patient contact surfaces, and high-touch areas where pathogenic viruses may persist. In the automotive sector, particularly in shared workshop environments, virucides are employed to sanitize tools, steering wheels, and door handles that experience frequent contact among technicians.

For industrial laundry operations, including both commercial laundries and self-service laundromats, virucidal additives and rinse solutions complement thermal disinfection processes (typically 65°C or higher) to ensure comprehensive viral inactivation on textiles, particularly for items requiring lower temperature washing. This dual-approach methodology is critical in healthcare laundries processing contaminated linens. The livestock sector also utilizes virucidal disinfectants in cleaning protocols for housing facilities, equipment, and vehicles to prevent viral transmission between animals and reduce disease outbreak severity.

Instaquim offers disinfectants with virucidal activity according to UNE-EN 14476, such as InstaBact® 3000, InstaBact® DS or Clor NF Pro. These formulations combine efficacy with material compatibility and user safety, meeting REACH requirements and applicable biocide legislation.
