Pool chlorine and flocculant: which product to use and at what dosage
Pool water is maintained with four steps: pH between 7.2 and 7.6, residual chlorine, good filtration and algae prevention. Ten products to cover each one, with the dosage exactly as stated on their technical data sheet.

pH first, then chlorine
The chlorine data sheets call for adjusting the pH to between 7.2 and 7.6 before chlorinating. To correct it, Instaminus (pH-) lowers the pH and Instaplus (pH+) raises it: 10 ml per m³ of water shifts the pH by one tenth (0.1).
Once the pH is adjusted, new or clean water is shock chlorinated with 10 g/m³ of Cloro 90% granulado or 15 g/m³ of Cloro 55% acción rápida, and the residual chlorine is then kept between 1.5 and 3 ppm (between 0.6 and 1 ppm with the triple-action tablets). If the water is cloudy, Instaflok removes suspended particles and improves filtration.
How to get pool water ready
- Measure the pH and chlorine with a test kit.
- Adjust the pH to between 7.2 and 7.6 with Instaminus or Instaplus: 10 ml/m³ for each tenth.
- Shock chlorinate new or clean water: 10 g/m³ of Cloro 90% granulado or 15 g/m³ of Cloro 55% acción rápida.
- If the water is cloudy, add Instaflok through the skimmers with the filtration running: 20 ml/m³ as a recovery treatment.
- Keep the residual chlorine between 1.5 and 3 ppm and check the pH and chlorine every day.
Which product to use in each case
Granular chlorine
Shock chlorination and maintenance
- Cloro 90% granulado — 10 g/m³ shock dose; ~2 g/m³ a day
- Cloro 55% acción rápida — 15 g/m³ shock dose; ~3 g/m³ a day
Chlorine tablets
Residual chlorine maintenance
- Cloro tabletas 90% — residual of 1.5–3 ppm
- Cloro tabletas triple acción — with copper sulphate; residual of 0.6–1 ppm
To clean the pool basin before filling, Desincpool. Calculators and seasonal guides in the pool treatment hub.
Dosage and use of each product
| Product | Composition | Dosage | Use according to data sheet |
|---|---|---|---|
| Cloro 90% granulado | Symclosene, >90% active chlorine | 10 g/m³ for shock chlorination; ~2 g/m³ a day | Water chlorination and sanitation; residual of 1.5–3 ppm |
| Cloro tabletas 90% | Symclosene, >90% active chlorine | 10 g/m³ for shock chlorination | Tablets; residual of 1.5–3 ppm |
| Cloro tabletas triple acción | Symclosene and copper sulphate | 10 g/m³ for shock chlorination | Does not alter the pH; compatible with algaecides; residual of 0.6–1 ppm |
| Cloro 55% acción rápida | Troclosene sodium, 55% active chlorine | 15 g/m³ for shock chlorination; ~3 g/m³ a day | Water chlorination and sanitation; residual of 1.5–3 ppm |
| Instaflok | Poly(aluminium hydroxychloride sulphate) | 5 ml/m³ for maintenance; 20 ml/m³ for recovery | Removes suspended particles; through the skimmers with a high water flow; not with diatomaceous-earth filters |
| Instaminus (pH-) | Hydrochloric acid 25% | 10 ml/m³ lowers the pH by 0.1 | For pH above 7.6 |
| Instaplus (pH+) | Sodium hydroxide 25% | 10 ml/m³ raises the pH by 0.1 | For pH below 7.2 |
| Algiquat Basic | Dimethyl-hydroxypropylammonium chloride polymer, ~7% | 3 l per 100 m³ a day | Algaecide; useful where continuous chlorination is difficult |
| Q Brom | Bromine, min. 32% active | Residual bromine of 1.5–3 ppm | Spas, jacuzzis and indoor pools; does not produce chloramines |
| Desincpool | Hydrochloric acid | At 25% in water | Cleaning the pool basin before filling; not in liner pools |
Check the pH and chlorine every day with a test kit, as the chlorine data sheets indicate, and adjust the maintenance doses to your readings. In public pools in Spain, RD 742/2013 sets free residual chlorine at 0.5–2.0 mg/l.

Frequently asked questions about pool chlorine and flocculant
How much chlorine does a pool need?
For new or clean water, with the pH between 7.2 and 7.6, shock chlorinate with 10 g per m³ of Cloro 90% granulado (10 ppm). Then keep the residual chlorine between 1.5 and 3 ppm by adding about 2 g/m³ a day. With Cloro 55% acción rápida, 15 g/m³ and about 3 g/m³ a day.
Granular chlorine or tablets?
The granules have a shock dose and a daily dose on their data sheet. The tablets maintain the residual chlorine: 1.5–3 ppm with Cloro tabletas 90% and 0.6–1 ppm with Cloro tabletas triple acción, which contain copper sulphate, do not alter the pH and are compatible with algaecides.
How is the flocculant used?
Instaflok is added through the skimmers while maintaining a high water flow, with the filtration running: 5 ml/m³ for maintenance and 20 ml/m³ as a recovery treatment. There is no need to adjust the pH, and it is not used with diatomaceous-earth filters.
How do I raise or lower the pool pH?
With Instaminus (pH-) if it is above 7.6 and with Instaplus (pH+) if it is below 7.2: 10 ml per m³ of water shifts the pH by one tenth. They are added through the skimmers or directly into the pool basin.
When is an algaecide needed?
Algiquat Basic is especially useful in pools where continuous chlorination is difficult, and it is compatible with traditional treatments. Maintenance: 3 l per 100 m³ a day, preferably with a dosing pump.
What should I use in a spa or jacuzzi?
Q Brom, bromine in 20 g tablets for spas, jacuzzis, whirlpool baths and indoor pools. It does not produce chloramines; the residual bromine must be kept between 1.5 and 3 ppm.
Do you supply residents' associations, hotels and distributors?
Yes. We have manufactured at our plant in Vic since 1990. See the distribution programme.
Which pool do you need to treat?
Tell us the volume, whether it is outdoor or indoor and what problem you have with the water: we will recommend the treatment at factory price.
