Advice for cleaning up after a flood
Cleaning homes, business premises and public spaces after a flood calls for method and caution. Here are some general guidelines:
- Protect yourself: wear sturdy gloves, rubber boots and, if there is a risk of splashes, eye protection. Mud and floodwater may be contaminated.
- Clean first, then disinfect: remove mud and dirt with water and detergent; a disinfectant does not work well on dirty surfaces.
- Always follow the label: respect the dose, directions for use and contact time of each product.
- Do not mix chemical products, especially bleach with ammonia or with acidic products, as they can release toxic gases.
- Ventilate the premises well during and after cleaning.
- Throw away any food and products that have been in contact with floodwater, and follow the instructions of the health authorities at all times.
