What the EU Ecolabel means on a cleaning product
The EU Ecolabel is the official environmental label of the European Union. It is voluntary, and it may only be used on products that meet environmental criteria set for each product category, which take the whole life cycle of the product into account. Compliance is checked by a competent body independent of the manufacturer. The criteria are reviewed periodically, and the manufacturer has to show again that its formulas meet them. That is why the renewal of the certification for Eco Gras, Eco Sol and Eco Top matters to the people who use them: it confirms that these products still meet those requirements.
What each product is used for
- Eco Top is a detergent for washing dishes and glassware by hand. It helps items dry on their own and contains skin-protecting agents. The right way to use it is to soak the dishes in water with the recommended dose rather than leaving the tap running; you do not need a lot of foam to clean well.
- Eco Gras is a kitchen degreaser for utensils, cabinets, tiles, worktops, floors and appliances. It is used neat: spray it on, leave it for a few seconds and wipe off with a damp cloth. On appliances, spray it onto the cloth rather than directly onto the appliance.
- Eco Sol is a cleaner for manually cleaning all types of floors. The recommended dose is 5 g per litre of water, which is one capful in a 5-litre bucket.
The range is completed by a multi-purpose cleaner, which also carries the ecolabel.
Getting the most out of an ecolabel range
An ecolabelled product performs best when it is used correctly. Sticking to the indicated dose and working at a suitable temperature cuts water and energy use and reduces water pollution; adding more product does not clean better. If the soiling is stubborn, it is better to repeat the operation than to increase the dose. And, like any chemical product, it must not be mixed with other products; the label also calls for protective gloves and eye protection.
Instaquim makes these products in Vic (Barcelona), where it has been working since 1990 with its own R&D and quality-control laboratory and a quality management system certified to ISO 9001 since 1999.
