Why a household detergent is not suitable

Industrial washing machines operate at high spin speeds and use automatic dosing systems. A household detergent with a high foam load causes overflows, damages sensors, clogs drain pumps and can void the manufacturer's warranty.

The correct industrial detergent has a low-foam formulation, controlled pH and viscosity optimised for peristaltic pumps.

How to check whether your detergent is compatible

Before switching detergent, or if you have doubts about the one you use now, go through the product documents. Five checks tell you whether it is designed for a professional washer with automatic dosing.

Technical data sheet and SDS: ask for both. The SDS must be prepared in line with the REACH Regulation and the labelling must follow Regulation (EC) 1272/2008 (CLP).
Intended use: the sheet should mention professional laundry or self-service laundries, not household use.
Dosing method: a uniform liquid with no sediment can be pumped; a powder needs a different system.
Dose in grams per kg of dry laundry: this is the figure the technician needs to programme the pump.
Pictograms and hazard statements: they tell you what protection the person changing the drums needs.

For example, the Power Gold data sheet gives a dose of 5 to 10 g per kg of dry laundry depending on soiling, a recommended temperature of about 40 ºC and a pH of 8.3 ± 0.3.

How to change detergent without trouble in the machines

Remove the old drum and flush the line with water before connecting the new one: never mix products in the tubes.
Recalibrate the pumps. Each product has its own viscosity and dose, so the old settings no longer apply.
Run a test cycle and watch the foam through the door glass during the wash and the spin.
During the first week, check daily for residue on the door seal, odour on the laundry and customer comments.

Looking after the machine matters too

With continuous use, scale and sources of bad odour build up inside the washer, even with the right detergent. Machine Clean is a product for the periodic care of washing machines with a strong descaling and hygiene action: it is run with the machine empty, following the dose, temperature and time on its data sheet, then rinsed thoroughly. It is classified as corrosive (H314), so handle it with gloves, eye protection and protective clothing.

Can I use powder detergent in a machine with automatic dosing?

Peristaltic pumps are designed for liquids. If you want to work with powder, you need a different dosing system or must load it by hand into the drawer, and you lose the dose control the pump gives you.
